2019 changes to driver licence rules in Victoria
For international students in Victoria and those considering moving for study, there are some important changes to driving licence rules to be aware of.
For international students arriving in Australia, you can still drive with your overseas permit. However, if you’re planning on staying for more than six months, must convert your licence to a Victorian licence within this time.
If you are already living in Victoria and are driving with an overseas or interstate licence, you have six months from 29 October 2019 to convert to a Victorian licence. These new regulations apply regardless of your visa or if you have an international driving permit.
Some things to note:
- Licence requirements and assessments have not changed.
- If you’re currently using an overseas driving licence, ensure the licence is always current and valid.
- If your licence is in a language other than English, be sure to keep an English translation of international permit with you whenever you’re driving.
