Development of minimum standards for international students
The Australian Human Rights Commission has announced that they are in the advanced stages of developing a list of minimum standards for Australia’s international students.
The draft document of the Minimum Standards for International Students, which the commission has been developing over the last 18 months, is currently being reviewed.
The Standards apply both Australian and international human rights laws to the case of international students studying in Australia.
According to Race Discrimination Commissioner Dr Helen Szoke, the aim is to ‘ensure that international students who come here have the most positive experience possible — with every protection under human rights laws that can be incorporated.’
‘The commission has been in regular touch with the peak student bodies in addition to the vocational and higher education industry to identify what the human rights implications are arising from the experiences of international students,’ Dr Szoke said.
The Standards cover seven key areas, including:
- accommodation
- education
- employment
- health and safety
- immigration
- information
- transport.
