How to plan your degree
What do you need?
The first thing you’ll want to find is something that is usually called a degree handbook or schedule.
Your degree handbook will include:
- Mandatory subjects
- Electives
- Suggested schedule for study
- Intended outcomes
Once you've gathered the info above you’ll want to open a spreadsheet or word/google doc to create a table.
List out all your subjects, from your major, and core subjects to electives you’re interested in.
Then you can start to plan out what each semester will look like for you.
If you’re interested in studying abroad for a semester or doing one or two subjects overseas for a short study abroad during summer or winter, then you will want to look into those too.
Check out when you can take them, what subjects you want to take while you’re away. That way you can plan out how it will effect your study plan and the completion of your degree.
If you’re having any trouble sorting out what your degree will look like, your university will have people who you can talk to to ask for advice.
Degree coordinators are great for helping you plan what your degree could look like for you depending on your circumstances. You might have exchange subjects or mandatory subjects that need to be completed as prerequisites for other subjects.
No matter how complicated your study plan could look like they'll help you make sense of it.
Counsillors and subject coordinators can also be helpful in helping you with plans for your degree. If you have one particular subject you need to finish this semester to complete your degree, getting support can help you relinquish any panic you might be feeling and reassure you so you can perform to the best of your ability.
