Students from all over the world choose to study in Melbourne, Australia’s best student city.
Constantly ranked as one of the most liveable cities in the world, Melbourne is home to more that 200,000 international students from over 170 countries.
The thought of travelling to a new country and studying in a foreign language might seem overwhelming.
Jirayut Propen is a Monash University medicine student from Thailand and he made use of student support resources and the transition from his home country to a foreign, big city became easier.
“I come from a rural area of north eastern Thailand. It takes eight hours by bus to get to Bangkok. Coming to Melbourne to study could have been really overwhelming, but I received so much support in the process that Melbourne quickly felt like home.’
Attracted by cultural experiences, Jirayut received a scholarship from the Royal Thai Government to study anywhere in the world. He chose Melbourne because he wanted a mix of a world-class education and unique experiences outside campus.
“For me it was really important to know that I would have great student support and experience a culture different to what I came from. Melbourne is so multicultural and has so many fantastic major events and great cultural experiences. There’s the Australian Open, the Australian Grand Prix, major horse races and of course, endless concerts.”
“The student services are great and offer support from the moment you arrive. They include airport pick-up, homestay networks and plenty of social activities to help you make friends with all your new fellow students quickly. I also really like that the study mode is so student-centric. It’s engaging and encourages interaction with other students.”
Jirayut undertook an English course before starting his medicine studies. The course helped him gain confidence in his language and make an easy transition into his undergraduate degree. He’s now well into his degree and looking forward to graduation in 2021 and a few more years to enjoy Melbourne.
“Don’t be scared to step outside your comfort zone. There’s so much support here and the experience of studying in Melbourne will be with you forever. If you use all the resources available and join some of the non-compulsory social events offered by your university, you’ll soon find yourself with new friends from around the world and a sense of belonging.”
Melbourne offers a friendly, safe and welcoming place to live and study.
Supported by Study Melbourne, a Victorian Government initiative, the Study Melbourne Student Centre is located in the heart of Melbourne and offers free information, support and helpful services for international students.
Students are encouraged to make the most of their time in Melbourne through Study Melbourne programs and services that help them have the best possible student experience.
Study Melbourne is here to help international students explore their new environment, gain work experience, become a leader or make new friends.
