The Master of Demography is the only degree of its kind offered in Australia. The degree provides students with an opportunity to study population issues in a research-led environment, with a focus on applying learning to real-world scenarios. The degree will equip students with cutting-edge skills in demographic techniques, research and writing. Graduates will emerge with the skills to undertake demographic analysis and apply these to societal issues. Two features of the program are the scenario-based learning approach and access to leading researchers. All courses will have these two key features as central components of the student experience.

Structure

  • The Master of Demography requires completion of 96 units (two years full time): 24 units of introductory postgraduate demography courses
  • 18 units of compulsory discipline-specific courses
  • 6 units of disciplinary courses
  • 6 units of a compulsory research training course and 6 units from an additional research training course
  • 12 units of research experience courses
  • and 24 units of elective courses offered by ANU.

Standard entry requirements

A Bachelor degree or international equivalent with a GPA of at least 5/7. All applicants must meet the University's English Language Admission Requirements.

Study pathways

Applicants with a Bachelor Degree or Graduate Certificate in a cognate discipline may be eligible for 24 units (1 semester) of credit. Applicants with a Bachelor Honours Degree or Graduate Diploma in a cognate discipline may be eligible for 48 units (1 year) of credit. Cognate disciplines Actuarial Studies, Anthropology, Demography, Development Studies, Economics, History, Indigenous Studies, Mathematics, Population Health, Population Studies, Public Health, Sociology, Statistics.
