This course is designed to enable students to acquire a broad understanding of the process of law in our society as well as gaining a range of legal and practical skills. It caters for two groups of students, those who have a general interest in legal issues without wishing to complete a full law degree and those who wish to gauge their interest in legal studies and later seek to undertake a full law degree program. This course is offered both internally and externally. External students have access to live online tutorials as well as online access to the recordings of all lectures, enabling them to complete the course from anywhere in the world.

Structure

The course is comprised of two common units, 60 credit points of Law core units, 50 credit points of Law specialist electives and 30 credit points of general electives. While the specialist electives are law units, the general electives may be chosen from a range of law and non-law electives. The law core units comprise an introductory unit and study in the areas of Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Torts, Contracts and Property Law.

Standard entry requirements

  • NTCET or equivalent (Year 12) and an ATAR of 60 or higher
  • Or Certificate IV or above
  • Or STAT score of 135 or greater
  • Or submission of an acceptable personal competencies statement and/or employment experience
  • Or 6 months of full-time study (or equivalent) of a higher education degree/diploma
  • Or completion of 40 credit points in the Preparation for Tertiary Study Program (ZTEP01), the Preparation for Tertiary Success (ZPTS11 or ZPTS21), or other recognised tertiary preparation course.

Study pathways

Students successfully completing this program are eligible for entry into the Bachelor of Laws program with significant advanced standing.
