Biotechnology is the science and technology of using living things, such as cells, genes, bacteria and DNA for the benefit of humankind. Many areas of science and society are now seeing the benefits of biotechnological research, development and application including bioremediation, cancer research, bio-processing, plant disease resistance and bio-control, wine research, therapeutic drug discovery, functional foods, bio-energy, water quality and marine biotechnology. This degree aims to provide students with the abilities to contribute to the development of scientifically sound, ethical and culturally sensitive solutions to complex problems for the economic and social benefit of society.
Structure
Students complete twelve core (compulsory) topics and a research project. These topics aim to provide students with the skills necessary to function as practitioners in the interdisciplinary, global research-intensive biotechnology industry.The research project is a vehicle for independent learning in a specific area of biotechnology that includes the principles of experimental design and analysis, innovation, critical thinking and research data presentation.

Standard entry requirements
Applicants must normally hold a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification in biological, agricultural or medical science.
Study pathways
The University may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, consider applicants who do not hold a bachelor degree or equivalent but can demonstrate relevant higher education study with relevant work experience, or relevant work experience which may meet the requirements for entry into the course.
