This degree builds on the existing physics, research knowledge and professional skills of students to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories in the systematic development of solutions to complex problems.

Structure

Students complete a selection of core (compulsory) topics, option topics and a research project. These topics aim to provide students an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities and an awareness of social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects of mathematics in a global community.The research component of the degree provides students the opportunity to conduct an in-depth investigation of a particular area under the guidance of a supervisor. The research components can focus on professional studies including nuclear and quantum physics and standards, ethics and compliance, in addition to the core topics students can choose option topics including partial differential equations, methods of applied mathematics and complex analysis.

Standard entry requirements

Applicants who hold an Honours degree in Physics or a closely related area are not eligible to apply for this degree. Applicants must normally hold a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification in Physics or with a major sequence in Physics or a closely related discipline. Knowledge of second year physics and mathematics is assumed. Applicants who hold an Honours degree in Physics or a closely related area are not eligible to apply for this degree.

Recognition

Graduates who have completed this program automatically qualify on application for admission to the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) with the grade of Member.

Study pathways

The University may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, consider applicants who do not hold a bachelor degree or equivalent but can demonstrate relevant higher education study with relevant work experience, or relevant work experience which may meet the requirements for entry into the course.
