This course will enable you to gain expertise in two highly-respected areas by combining science studies with an understanding of the law. This program opens up a range of career opportunities across science and law, including stem cell research, genetics and climate change. This professionally accredited law degree focuses on global and social justice. You'll study areas like criminal law, constitutional law and legal ethics, and science-related topics such as intellectual property and medicine and the law. Our visiting lecturers will help students develop an understanding of dispute resolution and recent legal developments. You may choose to do additional studies including Honours in Laws, subjects from the Global Business Law program at the Master's level and clinical practice in a law firm. You can tailor the science component to their interests and choose from specialisations comprising of botany, computer science, psychology, chemistry and physics, and get hands-on experience through lab studies and field trips.

Structure

Students are required complete compulsory law subjects and meet the requirements of the Bachelor of Science. Students complete a total of 600 credit points (360 credit points in law and 240 credit points in science. Students complete a total of 24 law subjects (18 compulsory subjects and six electives), and one science major. Honours in Law is available in the final year, while Honours in Science requires an additional year of full-time study.

Standard entry requirements

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL, and a study score of at least 20 in any Mathematics. International students must meet the academic and English language requirements of this course, provide supporting documentation to support their application and provide a personal statement for other information to be considered during the selection process. This may include any relevant work experience, personal accomplishments and achievements, community involvement and career goals. NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Recognition

All La Trobe University Bachelor of Laws and Juris Doctor law courses include the subjects required by the Victorian Legal Admissions Board to qualify for admission to the legal profession in Victoria as an Australian lawyer. Admission to the legal profession by the Supreme Court of Victoria also requires the completion of practical legal training either by a 12-month period of Supervised Legal Training or by completing an approved practical legal training course (for example, at the Leo Cussen Institute or The College of Law). Candidates for admission to practise must also satisfy the Admissions Board that they are a fit and proper person to be admitted to practise.

Study pathways

Honours is offered to high-achieving students; Honours in Law is available in the final year, while Honours in Science requires an additional year of (full-time) study.

Further information

Law electives are available in intensive delivery mode at the Melbourne Campus in Summer and Winter School. Only the first two years of this course are offered in Bendigo. While it is possible to arrange long-distance learning, La Trobe recommends transferring to the Melbourne Campus to complete this degree with a wider selection of subjects.
