This course engages students in foundation learning relevant to a profession in art therapy. A three-part learning approach incorporating experiential, theoretical and practical knowledge production underpins subject content and provides a foundation in art therapy principles of practice set within a humanistic framework. Students engage in art-making practice, self-reflective activities, trainee level art therapy sessions, seminars and class discussions as well as academic assessment tasks. The role of creativity, art making and psychological theory in relation to art therapy as a discipline are investigated and applied to child, adult or group therapy situations. These areas of learning form a foundation for future studies in art therapy and towards the Master Art Therapy qualification required for professional registration as an art therapist. Health or other professionals wanting to learn foundation studies in art therapy can graduate from this course to enrich or supplement their current roles. The Graduate Certificate in Art Therapy alone does not lead to professional registration however it may be a stepping stone to the full Master of Art Therapy.

Standard entry requirements

  • Prerequisites Academic level:- Australian Bachelor's degree (or equivalent)
  • Specialisations (Compulsory):- Bachelor's degree must be in a related field such as visual arts, education or health sciences
  • Folio (Compulsory):-Folio of 10-15 pieces of artwork
  • Work experience (Compulsory):- Minimum of one year's work experience in human services. Alternate entry Applications are also accepted from prospective students who do not meet the required bachelor's qualification but have relevant human services work related experience. Interview (Compulsory) Short-listed applicants will be required to attend a scheduled interview (this may occur via video or teleconference). International Students require IELTS (Academic) score of 7.5 with no individual band score less than 7.0

Recognition

The Graduate Certificate in Art Therapy is approved by the Australian, New Zealand and Asian Creative Arts Therapies Association (ANZACATA). Graduates of the Master of Art Therapy may apply for professional membership with ANZACATA. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree.
