This prestigious honours program allows you to pursue your passion for your selected area of study, via a fourth year of specialised coursework and research. The program is open to graduates with excellent results from a relevant undergraduate pass degree. The Honours degree involves you deciding on your thesis topic in conjunction with your academic supervisor, who then provides individual advice and guidance as you engage in depth with the subject, research and write your thesis. Completion of an Honours course provides prospective employers with proof of your advanced research, analytical and communication skills, and your ability to complete an independent and in-depth project over a sustained period of time. Honours graduates are often targeted as potential managers and leaders in large corporations.

Structure

  • This course involves a fourth year of study in one or both undergraduate majors and consists of a combination of coursework and research. In the coursework component you will develop advanced theoretical and/or technical knowledge of your discipline within the arts, humanities and social sciences and appropriate research methodologies. In the research component you will plan and execute a research project under the individual guidance of an academic supervisor.
  • Honours is available in: Archaeology and ancient history, Chinese studies, French studies, German studies, History, Indigenous cultures and histories, Indonesian studies, International studies, Italian studies, Japanese studies, Korean studies, Literary studies, Philosophy, Psychology, Spanish and Latin American studies, Theatre and performance.

  • An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with minimum overall WAM of 75.
  • Applicants must meet the undergraduate requirements of their chosen Honours area of study including: 48 credit points of studies and obtained a distinction grade average (75%) or above in 24 credit points at level three.
  • Note: Applicants with an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with an overall WAM between 70 and 75 may be considered upon satisfACT ory completion of an interview. Applicants will only be invited for interview if there are places remaining in the course and a supervisor is available for their chosen area of study.
  • For some areas of study completion of specific units, or their equivalent, may be also required for admission to honours. The details are provided with the requirements for each area of study to which this applies.
  • Additional selection criteria: For entry in Psychology, successful completion of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) - approved degree with an APAC-accredited major sequence.
  • Double degree students: Applicants who are enrolled in an Australian based Monash double degree course and who have not yet completed the requirements for the two degrees, may be eligible to enrol in this honours program once they have completed 144 points of study, including the normal requirements for the Bachelor degree containing the intended honours area of study.
  • Double degree students are only required to obtain a distinction grade average (75%) or above in 18 credit points of studies in their chosen Honours area of study at level three.
