Tasmania's government education system provides rich and rewarding learning experiences for all students. Tasmanian schools emphasise teaching skills such as literacy, numeracy and IT. Tasmanian schools also teach students to become independent thinkers who are informed and responsible citizens of a global society.

The Tasmanian Government provides schooling for students from four years of age. Beginning in kindergarten, students continue their education through primary school, junior high school and senior high school.

As an international student, you can enter into any grade of the Tasmanian school system, based on your age.

Upon completion of senior high school, students receive the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) and a national Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). With these qualifications, students can apply to study in universities all around Australia and the world.

International students in Tasmanian government schools stay in the government-run homestay program. A homestay means paid accommodation in a Tasmanian home. It is a home away from home - a welcoming place where you can study, relax and be part of a local Tasmanian family. Living in a homestay is also a fantastic way for you to practise your language skills in an English-speaking environment.

All Tasmanian government schools have dedicated student advisers to support you throughout your studies. Available Monday to Friday, from 8.30 am to 5 pm (in person or via phone and email), the student advisers will provide you with advice on settling into Tasmania, manage your orientation and be the first point of contact if you ever have any problems or issues.

All Tasmanian government schools offer English as a Second Language (ESL) tuition on campus. The programs delivered in each school will teach you a range of important skills for improving your English language level. You will receive English language tuition to suit your level of ability.

Other student support services offered by Tasmanian government schools include:

  • a 24/7 emergency phone line
  • language and learning support
  • pre-departure information
  • airport pick-up
  • banking and phone set-up
  • orientation.
