This internationally recognised research master degree is designed for students to develop advanced skills in carrying out independent and sustained research. It comprises 50 points of coursework, including two compulsory 12.5 point subjects, two 12.5 point elective subjects and a thesis of 20,000 words which should demonstrate a critical application of specialist knowledge and make an independent contribution to existing scholarship in the area of research.

Structure

All candidates for the MPhil will be examined on the basis of their thesis. A candidate will have appropriately experienced supervisor/s and an Advisory Committee who in consultation with the candidate, arranges a course of supervised research designed to suit the individual requirements and interests of the candidate. A candidate may be required to supplement their research program by attendance at, or enrolment in, additional subjects if considered necessary by the supervisor(s). In the six months prior to submission of their thesis candidates must present their research findings at a public completion seminar attended by their Advisory Committee.

Standard entry requirements

At least a four-year honours degree at H2A (75%) standard from an Australian university, or other qualification or combination of qualifications considered by the RHD Committee to be equivalent, that are relevant to the area of study. Must show evidence of capacity to undertake research as prescribed in the University Handbook. Evidence that the knowledge of the discipline in which the research higher degree is planned is current. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection.

Research students must maintain a grade average of 75% in all coursework.
