Structure

  • Eight core subjects (100 points): Core subjects provide you with the knowledge and technical skills needed to generate, evaluate, and implement plans as well as insight into economic and environmental changes in cities
  • Four specialisation subjects (50 points)
  • Capstone subject (25 points). You must complete MSD Minor thesis
  • Two multidisciplinary electives (25 points): You choose two electives from other disciplines at the Melbourne School of Design or other faculties in subjects such as such as economics, engineering, public health, development studies, social work and law. Planners work with many other disciplines in practice and these subjects prepare you to work effectively in industry.

Standard entry requirements

  • In order to be considered for entry applicants must meet the following criteria: An undergraduate degree in any discipline with a weighted average mark (WAM) of at least 65% (University of Melbourne equivalent)
  • And A Personal Statement of up to 500 words
  • And Satisfy the University of Melbourne's English Language Requirement.

Accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA).

Study pathways

School leavers applying for the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Design at the University of Melbourne can secure a place in the Master of Urban Planning at the same time through the Graduate Degree Packages program, subject to meeting entry requirements.
