The ‘Information Age’ and the ‘Digital Economy’ describe a world driven by information and communication technologies (ICT). From health to business, manufacturing to creative industries, the skills needed to navigate and succeed in our connected society are delivered through the study of Information technology (IT). IT is all about the application of technology to solve business, organisational, or social problems. At the University of Newcastle, we prepare IT graduates to be technically savvy, creative, and flexible, and our information technology degree is designed to meet industry's evolving IT needs. You will study courses to develop your skills in programming, AI, cyber security, and cloud computing in one of two areas of major studies. In the ICT development major, you will focus on learning the skills needed to develop new systems and apps whereas the ICT professional major will see you focus on the skills needed to secure, integrate, deploy, and manage ICT technologies. Uniquely, our IT degree includes a specialisation pathway – pick four courses from education and become an ICT Trainer, or four courses from health to hone your ICT skills for e-health systems! From business to climate science, criminology to animation – take your IT skills in the direction you choose.
Structure
- The Bachelor of Information Technology requires students to pass courses totalling 240 units, as follows: 140 units of Core courses
- One major comprised of 60 units
- 40 units of Electives or an Elective Pathway of your choice.

Standard entry requirements
Year 12 or equivalent. Alternative entry pathways may include approved TAFE studies, preparatory programs such as Newstep, Open Foundation or Tertiary Preparation Certificate. Assumed knowledge: any 2 units of English. Mathematics, while not essential, could be helpful in some majors.
Recognition
The Bachelor of Information Technology is recognised by the Australian Computer Society.
Study pathways
Credit transfer agreements with TAFE NSW and other education providers are under continuous negotiation. A Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) is also available to meritorious students, as an additional year of full-time or equivalent part-time study.
