Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry (Honours)

UNSW Sydney

Type of institution: Higher Education Institutions
Level: Undergraduate
CRICOS: 00098G

This is a professionally oriented, interdisciplinary program. Medicinal Chemistry is the development of new pharmaceutical agents, from concept to clinic. This involves design and synthesis of novel drug candidates, to their biochemical effects, testing regimes and regulatory and ethical considerations. Graduates are equipped with a unique and wide harmony of skills, from fundamental chemistry through to relevant pharmacology and molecular biology skills. This puts graduates in high demand in local and global pharmaceutical companies involved in modern drug design. In addition, the multidisciplinary nature of the program means that graduates will also be highly marketable within other science-based industries and related fields.

Structure

192 UoC in total. The first year of this four-year program will provide a solid foundation knowledge in some fundamental areas of science - chemistry, mathematics and biology - and year two and year three will focus on chemistry, pharmacology and biochemistry. The fourth (Honours) year provides a substantial research experience which is integral to the overall degree - Medicinal Chemistry students apply their knowledge to a research project, supervised by a UNSW researcher. Students select from a wide range of medicinal chemistry research projects that emphasise the interdisciplinary and collaborative nature of the program, and complete the year by producing a thesis on their research.
