This professional and competitive four year program is designed for students who want to work as registered psychologists. Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour. It is a diverse discipline that covers the relationship between the brain and behaviour; the processes of perceiving, learning and memory; the assessment of abilities and attitudes; the origins of personality and emotional states; the nature and effects of social interactions; and the causes of abnormal behaviour. This program includes the opportunity to take an exclusive course on Introduction to Psychological Applications, offered only to students in this program. The final year honours program combines practice-based coursework with a research thesis.

Structure

  • First year focuses on introductory psychology courses, with electives from Science and across the University. In second and third years, focus is on psychological science with courses in social and developmental psychology, cognitive science, perception and development as well as psychology and law, and health psychology, depending on student interests. The final year sees students embark on an honours year conducting a research project in varied areas
  • they could undertake research in abnormal and clinical psychology

  • cognitive science, cognition and perception
  • data analysis and psychometrics
  • industrial and organisational psychology
  • and social, personality and developmental psychology.

Recognition

This program meets the requirements of 4 years of academic training towards membership of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and registration as a psychologist in NSW.

Further information

This is a four-stage full-time program. In any one session students must enrol in a full study load of 24 uoc in accordance with the requirements of the program. Only in exceptional circumstances will students be allowed to enrol in a reduced program, and this requires the permission of the Head of School of Psychology.
