Social Work is a key profession in the promotion of social justice and social welfare in Australian society, and internationally. Social workers are involved with people at individual, family, and community levels to bring about change. Social workers require strong analytical skills and a high level of knowledge in order to understand and address the causes and dynamics of social disadvantage. At the same time, they require a large repertoire of skills for working with individuals, groups and communities to assist them in gaining greater control over resources and decision-making. The degree course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for contemporary social work practice. Upon completion of the course, students will have a strong grounding in the following areas: interpersonal and groupwork, community development, policy analysis, social research and social action. Industry-based education is an integral part of the teaching program and over the duration of the course, students will normally complete two field education placements in different human services agency settings. The Bachelor of Social Work course is accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers.
